Do you have a compelling, mind-altering, or perspective shifting true story to tell? Have you been composing a blog or a journal that you can’t help but feel has become an insight into a larger issue? Whether you’ve been working on a manuscript for years, or you’re simply the type to explode out of the start gate at the mere mention of a challenge, there’s an opportunity on the horizon. EVENT magazine, published out of Douglas College, is currently accepting submissions for their 2012 creative non-fiction contest.
Creative non-fiction writing is an evolving form with few set conventions, which allows for a wide breadth of exploration and experimentation in a piece. The potential diversity of the form can clearly be seen in this month’s issue of EVENT, featuring the 2011 contest winners Chris Donahoe and Krissy Darch. Both writers took very different approaches in their story composition, structure, and tone; both pieces are executed in a way that transcends the reader’s expectations of a typical non-fiction story. These writers remind the audience that every experience we have can be artfully woven into a haunting record of personal history, or crafted into a resounding insight with the right touch. The range of perspective that could be set in to motion within this contest is limitless.
